The textile industry's environmental impact hit me hard, prompting me to re-evaluate my design approach. I realized the clothes I was creating needed to be more conscious.
This led to the birth of Cangrejo, a personal project from my university research in 2014. Initially, it was a vibrant collection of gender-neutral children's prints (ages 2-4) that prioritized playful colours and engaging patterns.
Upon returning home, I transformed Cangrejo into a sustainable fashion brand. I sourced organic and certified Peruvian cotton for the clothes and ensured the use of harmless, non-toxic inks for the silk-screen printed designs. Overseeing the entire process allowed me to implement ethical practices throughout.
Cangrejo's mission is to provide young children with comfortable, ethically-made clothing that allows for exploration and discovery. We utilize sustainable materials like natural fibres and advocate for a broader colour palette that breaks free from traditional stereotypes. While self-expression may be limited at this age, our designs offer comfort, quality, and a connection to the natural world, fostering a foundation for conscious choices later in life.
